How To Create a Forest Bathing Practice

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best way to create a forest bathing/ nature sit practice will vary depending on your personal preferences. However, there are some general tips that can help you get started.

First, choose a time of day when you’ll be able to fully relax and enjoy the experience. If you can, try to avoid scheduling other activities around your forest bathing session, as this will only add to your stress levels.

Sunrise and Sunset are the magic hours of the day where the transition between day and night offers a unique perspective and shift in nature. If you can manage it, try to forest bathe during these times.

Next, decide on a location. If you live near a forest, that’s ideal, but any green space will do. Once you’ve found a spot, take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to fully take in your surroundings. Take your time walking around, and pay attention to the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. And don’t forget to stop and sit for a while, letting the peacefulness of the forest envelop you.

Allow yourself to see with new eyes, like the eyes of a child. Create a sense of wonder through your observations. Tune into the finer details of leaves, bark, animal tracks, mushrooms, and animal encounters. Reflect on the laws of nature and how they resonate within yourself.

Finally, when you’re ready to head back home, take a few minutes to reflect on your experience. You might want to journal about it, or simply take a few moments to meditate on the peace and tranquility you found in nature.

Creating a forest bathing ritual can help you reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your overall health. So why not give it a try? You might just find that it’s the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.

7 key components of Forest Bathing are:

1. Finding a time when you can relax and be in the moment.

2. Going to a location where you will be undisturbed and immersed in nature. Any nature setting is ideal, such as a meadow, your favorite overlook, forest, stream bed, or bush can be used… but your backyard, front stoop, or park bench may also be beneficial if you do not have access to natural areas.

3. Taking your time and savoring the moments in nature. Practice Presence.

4. Focusing on your senses while you are in nature. Breathe, feel the breeze on your skin, touch the Earth with your feet and hands, Listen to the Wind through the leaves and trickling of Water

5. Letting go of any expectations or preconceived notions. Nature communicates in subtle ways. Appreciate small details

6. Being open to the experience and allowing yourself to be transformed. Observe animal sightings, insects and their behaviors. How do you relate with your surroundings?

7. Reflecting on your experience afterward to maximize the benefits, Journal.

It is most beneficial to frequent your sit spot over time spending 15 minutes to 1 hour communing with nature. You begin to develop a relationship and sense of place. Not only are there tremendous health and wellness aspects to forest bathing but your awareness, sense of observation, and intuition may develop as you go deeper into a nature sit practice.
