Discovering Maui’s Sacred Sites

Maui is an island of great spiritual power and beauty. There are many sacred sites to visit here, each with its own unique energy and offerings. In this blog post, we will explore three of Maui’s most sacred places: Haleakala, the Iao Needle, and Makalua Puna Point.

Haleakala

Haleakala is a 10,023-foot tall volcano that is said to be the home of the Hawaiian goddess, Pele. Pele is known for her power, passion, and strength, and is said to be responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Haleakala is also known as the “House of the Sun,” and it is said that the first light of each day touches Haleakala before anywhere else on Earth. For these reasons, Haleakala is considered to be a very sacred place. 

Haleakala is a truly magical place and is definitely worth a visit. There is a special feeling to be walking high amongst the clouds. It’s as if you are walking amongst the Gods. The views from the crater are simply breathtaking and the experience is one that you will never forget. If you are looking for a spiritual experience, then haleakala is the perfect place for you.

The Iao Needle

The Iao Needle is a 1,200-foot tall rock formation that is located in Iao Valley State Park. The Iao Needle is said to be spiritually significant because it is the ancestral home of many Hawaiian chiefs. It is also considered to be a place of great natural beauty. 

Iao Needle is a significant historical site in addition to being a wonderful natural wonder. In the years between 1400 and 1500 AD, Kaka’e declared the entire valley, including the needle, to be a “holy” (kapu) location. Only royals were permitted to access the valley during times of peace because it was a sacred location. Due to need, the restriction on commoners visiting the ‘Iao Valley was relaxed during times of war. The valley and needle themselves have at least once been utilised to launch a last-ditch defense of the region.

The plateau above the needle itself served as both a necessary lookout and a natural altar. The needle is so tall that the needle often pierces the clouds.

During my first visit here, I witnessed a pure white goat climbing the peaks like an ethereal guide and reminder to keep reaching for the top.

Makaluapuna Point

A beautiful location on the eastern coast of Maui is Makaluapuna Point. It is known for its dramatic cliffs and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It is referred to as Dragon’s Teeth as the lava rocks have the same shape as a dragon’s mouth, as their name implies. The Honokahua Burial Site is a prehistoric Hawaiian burial ground. Visitors are urged to respect this sacred place with reverence.

Just north of Dragon’s Teeth, there is a sizable circle of stones in the shape and design of a labyrinth. Walk in prayer, mindfulness, and presence amongst these elements to anchor in the spirit and wonder of Aloha.

Maui is a power spot for beauty, mystery, and heritage. A place where the locals still honor the land and culture. The Power of Place is potent amongst these islands and when approached with love, openness, and gratitude, many blessings arise in the experience.
