How to Travel Safely Alone as a Woman
As a woman, traveling solo can be both exhilarating and scary. On one hand, you have the freedom to go where you want, when you want. On the other hand, you’re vulnerable to all sorts of risks, both physical and emotional. But with a little bit of mindful preparation, you can minimize those risks and set out on your solo journey with confidence. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway or an extended trip abroad, solo travel can be an incredibly enriching experience. Women who travel alone often report feeling a sense of liberation and empowerment that comes from being in control of their own itinerary and schedule.
If you’re a woman who loves to travel and is looking for some guidance on how to do it safely and mindfully, read on for some tips.
Be Confident
I feel this is one of the most important keys to traveling solo as a woman. Or, in any situation where you feel intimidated by your environment. Invoke your Inner Bad Ass!! Fake it till you make it, If you project confidence, you will be less likely to be targeted by predators. Stand up straight, make eye contact, and speaking confidently—even if you don’t feel that way on the inside. This is especially important in cultures where women are seen as submissive, so by exuding confidence, you will set yourself apart and deter would-be attackers.
Do Your Research Ahead of Time
When you’re planning your trip, take some time to research the area you’ll be visiting. Read up on the local culture and customs, familiarize yourself with the layout of the city or town, and learn a few key phrases in the local language. The more you know about your destination, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel when you actually get there.
For example, if you are planning on hiking in a remote area, research the trail ahead of time so that you can be prepared for any potential hazards.
Stay Connected With Loved Ones Back Home
Let your loved ones know your travel plans before you depart, and check in with them regularly throughout your trip. This way, if anything happens, they’ll know where to find you and how to help. You might also consider downloading a safety app like bSafe or Safetrek, which allow you to share your location in real-time with people you trust.
If I’m going on a hike I always touch base with a friend or family member to inform them of my location and when I come out. I also do this on random outings if I intuitively feel guided to.
Trust Your Intuition
One of the most important things to remember when traveling alone is to trust your intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and don’t hesitate to walk away from any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, no matter how well-intentioned the other person may seem.
Self-Defense & Situational Awareness
As a martial artist, I find it extremely beneficial if all women and children take classes on at least basic self-defense and situational awareness training. It could very well save their lives if ever at a disadvantage or have to quickly assess a situation to avoid or get out of danger. There is no substitute for in-person training, but it may be helpful to also check out Women’s Self Defense on Youtube for some tips and tricks.
Keep Important Information Close at Hand
Make sure you have all of your important documents—passport, ID, insurance card, etc.—in an easily accessible place at all times. And if possible, make copies of important documents like your passport just in case they get lost or stolen while you’re away from home.
Don’t Put All Your Faith In Technology
In today’s world, it’s easy to rely on technology to keep us safe. But it’s important to remember that technology can fail or get lost. So, even if you’re carrying a cell phone and a personal safety app, don’t let your guard down completely. Be aware of your surroundings and trust your intuition—it’s always better to err on the side of caution. It is also very easy to rely on your phone for directions, bring a map as back up.
Know When to Ask for Help
There’s no shame in asking for help when you need it, whether you’re lost and need directions or you feel like you’re in danger and need assistance. If you’re ever feeling unsafe, don’t hesitate to reach out to a police officer, security guard, or even a stranger who looks like they can be trusted.
The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings, and if you feel like something is off, trust your gut and get out of there.
Stay Safe and Have Fun!
Remember to be confident, stay connected, and trust your gut. The most important thing is to relax and have fun! By following the tips above, you can help ensure that your solo travel experience is both safe and enjoyable. So get out there and explore the world—it’s an amazing place!
With these guidelines in mind, go forth and explore the world solo! Just remember to be confident, stay connected, and trust your gut. And most importantly, have fun!
